Coconut

Coconut on

➡️What is coconut? Coconut can be considered a fruit, a nut, and a seed. To be more specific, it’s a fibrous one-seeded drupe. When picked from the coconut palm tree, it is hard and green and that layer is called the exocarp. Under that layer is the husk (it looks brown and hairy) and is called the mesocarp. Inside that is the endocarp, which is the outside of the seed. Open up the seed and you’ll get to the white layer of coconut “meat” and liquid.

➡️ What are the different food products that are made from coconut? Coconut is a hugely versatile food and a perfect substitute for many things when adhering to a #glutenfreedairyfree way of eating. Some products made from coconut: coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut flakes (desiccated coconut), coconut water, coconut flour, coconut vinegar, coconut sugar (made from the sap of the flower on the coconut palm), coconut butter (also known as coconut manna), and coconut aminos (a #glutenfree soy sauce alternative made from fermentation of the sap of the coconut plant.)

➡️ What are some interesting facts about coconut? Coconut oil can be considered a superfood due to its medium-chain triglyceride (MCTs) content. Whether supporting a weight loss program, moisturizing skin and hair, or metabolizing into energy, coconut oil can have a significant role for your body. Coconut also has notable anti-viral and anti-microbial properties as well.

Coconut is rich in fiber, Vitamin B6, iron, and minerals like magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc.

Did you know that beyond the fruit and water of the coconut that we consume as food, consumers also use the husk and shells as a potting medium, carbon filtration, charcoal, bio-fuel, and even organic cat litter. Another use for the husks is the production of coir, which manufacturers use in making mattresses, doormats, and more.

Durango Smoked Sea Salt

Durango-Hickory Smoked Salt

➡️ What is smoked salt? Durango Smoked Sea Salt by Canadian Small Business The Salt Cellar is created when delicate Pacific sea salt flakes are naturally smoked with untreated Hickory wood, resulting in a full, smoked flavour without turning bitter. There is no liquid smoke (which often contains additional unwanted ingredients) and no artificial flavour added. Hickory smoked flavour is often synonymous with the flavour of southern cooking. It is a fantastic flavour booster.

➡️ Where do we source our smoked salt? We use @passionateaboutsalt as our supplier. They are located in Okotoks, Alberta and operate as a small team. They pride themselves on being local and they produce their blends in-house. They make their blends in small batches ensuring freshness. They started by selling at farmer's markets and then expanded into retail shops. They also sell in bulk to restaurants.

➡️ Where does @passionateaboutsalt get their salt?
All their salts are hand-harvested, unrefined sea salts from around the world. From the salt ponds in France to the salt deposits deep in the Himalayan Mountains.
